Q & A With the Author

Q: We notice that Weasel 1 (Keeping Down Appearances) was first published in 2016, and that Weasel 3 (Playing with Fire) has just now come out, in 2024. Did it really take you that long to write those books?

A: No. Once I got into them, each book took about 6-8 months to write. I wrote them mostly at night, in bed (while my wife was sleeping), and most of the time according to Weasel’s schedule! I was not trying to meet a deadline. Most of the time I felt like the books were writing themselves. But Weasel as a possible hero character first introduced himself to me back in 1999. I think I wrote a very rough outline of the first chapter then.

Q: What’s with the strange Santa’s Elves video, and where did the funky music come from?

A: I had hoped that Weasel 1 would be out in time for Christmas 2016, so that people might buy it for a Christmas present, but I think it was not quite ready for prime time until a couple months after that. I considered using other music but in the end decided to use something I had written and played myself, to avoid copyright issues.

Q: Weasel 1 is available from both Amazon and Lulu, and costs more, while Weasel 2 and 3 are available only on Lulu.com. Why is that?

A: Well, that’s a good question! I kept Weasel 1 available through sites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble because I know how convenient it is for people to order stuff if they are already set up with, say, Amazon Prime. For instance, I was having coffee with a friend who, after hearing that I had a book out, ordered it off Amazon right then and there, from his phone, in less than 30 seconds! So, I did not want to lose that convenience factor. But I also wanted to be able to offer the books at a more affordable price, and I can do that through Lulu (which also happens to be the world’s largest independent bookseller). I think that anyone who reads Weasel 1 will want to read the other two books, and will appreciate the lower prices on Lulu! $14.99 a piece is a lot easier to swallow than $22!

Q: Will there be a Weasel 4?

A: Who can say? I have not heard anything from Weasel for a long time, and I am not sure how his story would continue, but I also felt the same way after Weasel 1 and ended up writing two more books!

Q: What would you say to someone who is on the fence about buying a Weasel book?

A: Well, if you live in Florence, TX, you don’t have to buy them, as they are available at the library. I think these are the kind of books that sell themselves. The characters you meet—some of them become your friends, all of them become a part of you, and you end up feeling like you are much the better for knowing them. I have been surprised to find that Weasel is popular with readers of all ages. The books are fun but not shallow, and they lift you up to a good place. They are are the kind of books you want to share with friends and talk about.
